Artists to Watch 2017

As the 2016 year comes to an end, a new legion of artist are pushing to the front with singles and EPs that seem promising going into the new year. With legend after legend being taken away, we must give attention to the new voices of the generation. The way music is consumed today it is easy to miss all the amazing talent actively werking. Lucky you have programs like Cookies and Lemonade which keep you updated on the new records coming out! I have compiled a list of 10 artist you should put an asterisk beside for 2017. Kodie Shane

Signed to Lil Yachty’s Sailing Team, this Atlanta rapper has over 1 million plays on Soundcloud and 55,000 subscribers on YouTube. Her tomboyish nature and fearless style bring a uniqueness to the music scene reminiscent of Da Brat in the 90s. Her music is effortless with high energy and upbeat tempos. In a sit down interview with Say Cheese TV she talks about her upbringing and her start in music. She has some major cosigns, including Producer Chubbie Baby who brought her to a showcase held at Patchwerk to play her music for LA Reid, Chairman and CEO of Epic Records. The rest was history. You can check out her videos on her YouTube page including Sad ft. Lil Yachty which has 1.7 million views. Her 5 song EP Zero Gravity is available on iTunes and Spotify.

6lack

An R&B Artist from East Atlanta, 6lack, pronounced black, released his debut project FREE 6LACK in November of this year. With 100,000 followers on Twitter and Instagram and his 65,000 on Soundcloud it’s clear that he just getting started. But, those that know him love him. Many of his followers on twitter applaud him for the honesty in his lyrics. His single PRBLMS released in June of 2016 ahas over 1 million plays on YouTube and 6 million on Soundcloud. He is signed to Love Renaissance and Interscope.

Playboi Carti

Recently signed to Interscope, this 20 year old ATLien has over 400,000 followers on Instagram alone. Signed to A$AP Mob as far back as October in 2015, he has already found a presence in the industry, despite not having a complete project. He proves the power of the single, with his songs “Broke Boy” and “Fetti” collecting well over 15 million views and drawing the attention of major artists. Be on the lookout for his debut project in the new year. 

Noname

This Chicago rapper dropped a 10 track project on her Soundcloud 4 months ago and it has already garnered 10 million plays. She has over 200,000 followers on her social media pages and landed a feature on Chance the Rapper and Jeremih’s joint album Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama. She holds her own on the single titled, “Tragedy,” with her soft yet powerful voice.

Russ

Recently featured on Patchwerk’s Periscope show ArtWerk already has a following on social media and all over the US. This seemingly unknown artists’ Instagram and twitter pages are verified and collectively hold his 380,000 followers. His pages include both domestic and international booking information establishing him as a full fledged touring artist. His Soundcloud has 286,000 followers and 88 tracks. He has released 3 mixtape and countless singles that he wrote, produced and engineered. In 2016 he signed to Columbia records.

Young Swift

He’s been on the scene for a few years now but is just now gaining notoriety for his latest single “Pull Up.” His album release party held in Patchwerk Recording Studios had attendees listening to Nights on Concord, which features smooth R&B sounds and crushing harmonies. Signed to Epic records, and co-signed my producer Chubbie Baby, he will undoubtedly find success in the new year.

Young M.A

Her hit song “OOOUUU” catapulted her to fame and fortune. But, this seemingly overnight success story was actually years in the making. More and more videos have surfaced showcasing her killer freestyle and free sense of style as nothing new. Born in Brooklyn, New York this female emcee is taking the Hip-hop world by storm. We’ve yet to hear a studio album from this unsigned artist so it’s safe to say she’s only getting started.

 

Amine

You may not have heard “Caroline” yet but you will. It’s fun, upbeat, and in true Portland fashion a little bit weird. This young rapper, whose name is pronounced uh-mean-aye, released his breakout single only 9 months ago and it has already racked up 43 million plays on Soundcloud, and 62 million views on YouTube It has made its way up the charts peaking at 11 on The US Billboard Hot 100. He has over 300,000 on his respective social media account collectively and it’s only going up. He has proved the power of the single and has high expectations as we close out the year.

Dua Lipa

Hailing from the UK this Pop sensation has already built a following over seas and has brought her talent to the US. Set to release her self-titled debut studio album in February of 2017, she seeks to make a mark in a genre currently dominated by Beyonce and Rihanna. She already has certified gold and platinum singles under her belt and music videos with over 10-20 million views. Signed to Warner Bros. this 21 year old has a lot to prove but is already off to a great start.

Rob $tone

With over 56 million plays on his single “Chill Bill” this 21 year old San Diego rapper proves all good things come to those who wait. The single which was released as a debut single in June of this year is actually from $tone’s debut mixtape Straight Bummin’ released in February of 2015. The song was before its time, because after its rerelease and corresponding music video, it made its way to the 29th spot on the US Billboard Hot 100. He’s kept the momentum up, releasing his second mixtape I’m Almost Ready in September of this year and he just wrapped up the Turnt & Burnt Tour with A$AP Ferg and Playboi Carti. Signed to RCA, certainly ready to take his talents worldwide.
